American Magic Welcomes Patriot!
PATRIOT!
The U.S Contender for the 37th America’s Cup!
COUNTDOWN TO AC37
.New York Yacht Club American Magic splashed and sailed their #3 AC75 boat, Patriot, on May 7, 2024. The team gathered at their base early in that morning with a ceremonial christening prior to the launch.
Key Features of **Patriot**:
- Slightly Asymmetric Race Foils: The first set of race foils on Patriot features a slightly asymmetric design, promising improved performance on the water.
- Deck Layout: The deck layout places the helms and trimmers side by side and well forward. This arrangement aims to enhance communication and coordination during races.
- Recumbent Cyclors: One of the most eye-catching features is the recumbent cyclors facing aft. These crew members generate power through cycling, contributing to the boat’s speed. The challenge? Avoiding seasickness while pedaling!
- Intricately Sculpted Foils: American Magic opted for harlequin-style foils that taper into a sharply pointed, stubby bulb. The end-plates are masterfully crafted, and the foil arms meet minimum weight requirements.
- Fences and Surface Cameras: Along the foil arms, three fences—two lower and one upper—integrate seamlessly with surface cameras for data collection.
The Christening Ceremony
Vice-Commodore Clare Harrington of the New York Yacht Club christened the boat by breaking a champagne bottle over the hull. The name Patriot pays tribute to the team’s beloved #2 AC36 vessel.
Tow Testing and Sail Deployment
After the ceremony, the team conducted a 7.5 nautical mile tow test at various speeds. Confident in their design, they deployed the sails for the return leg to the base. LiDar cameras captured every detail as Patriot glided through the water.
The Quest for the America’s Cup
With their sights set on reclaiming the prestigious America’s Cup trophy, the New York Yacht Club aims to make history with Patriot. As the 37th America’s Cup campaign unfolds, all eyes will be on this remarkable boat.
The Welcome Party!
On May 10, 2024, Sail Pensacola collaborated with Seville quarter to throw a welcome party for Patriot. American Magic’s Pensacola home-town fans gathered for a video chat with the team along with an update from team CEO Terry Hutchinson.
